Why Is Autism On The Rise?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disability that is characterized by repetitive patterns of behaviour, avoidance of eye contact and struggles with social interaction.

According to a study by the CDC on a group of participants, the rate of Autism prevalence has increased over the last two decades. As of 2020, it was estimated that 1 in every 36 8-year-old children is diagnosed with Autism. This is a jump from 1 in every 44 children in 2018. The report found that Black and Hispanic children were being diagnosed with Autism more than white children. The prevalence of Autism among girls has also increased by 1%.

A more recent report on 4-year-olds still indicated that compared to white children autism rates were 1.8 times as high among Hispanic kids, 1.6 times as high among Black kids, 1.4 times as high among Asian or Pacific Islander children, and 1.2 times as high among multiracial children.

Why Is Autism On The Rise?

Growing Awareness and Advocacy

Autism may have always been a common condition. However, lack of information, advanced screening tools, and other challenges have always hindered providing early intervention services.

Screening and diagnosis

The rates may increase, decrease, or stagnate depending on the country’s screening and diagnosis efforts.

Emphasis should be placed on early screening, as we will have more diagnosed cases, hence early intervention and support provision.

Autism screening should be done at the 18 and 24-month checkups.

Environmental Factor

According to research, environmental factors also contribute to autism. They include exposure to pollution, maternal mental health, pesticides, and more.

Broadened Diagnosis criteria

In previous editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), children could not be diagnosed with both autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

However, the more recent DSM-5 allows for multiple diagnoses and introduces the term autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

Other factors may lead to an increase in Autism diagnosis and include:

  • Premature birth and low birth weight
  • Exposure to environmental pollutants
  • Maternal stress

As the number of Autism diagnoses continues to rise, we must step up our efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive society. With greater awareness comes a deeper understanding of the unique needs and strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum. However, awareness alone is not enough. We need to invest in resources that provide practical support for families, educators, and caregivers, ensuring that those with autism have access to the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

Moreover, championing for inclusion must become a priority. Whether in schools, workplaces, or communities, we need to build environments that embrace neurodiversity and empower individuals with autism to participate fully and equally in all areas of life. Now more than ever, we must create a world where everyone, regardless of their diagnosis, is valued, understood, and included.
